VoIP Telephony Explained

VoIP or Voice over Internet Protocol refers to technology that allows you to make calls through your high-speed broadband connection rather than through a traditional landline or mobile network.

The technology is well established and far more reliable than traditional landlines or mobiles. You can still receive calls from traditional landlines or mobiles but with VoIP the information is transmitted to you through your internet connection. Similarly, you can make calls to traditional landlines or mobiles through a VoIP phone or headset.

As a consequence of VoIP using your broadband connection you are no longer liable for traditional landline costs and this could result in a major cost saving to your business.

Is a VoIP phone worth it?

The short answer to this is yes.

The technology is well established and reliable. Ultimately depending on your system, the cost of making calls could be zero as you are no longer relying on traditional landlines or tied to mobile contacts.

What is a VoIP phone and how does it work?

A VoIP phone is a phone that uses the internet to transmit your call rather than traditional telephone wires. Traditional phones are connected to a set of phone wires that ultimately route your calls through an exchange and onto the final destination.

There is often a charge for this from your telephone provider. VoIP phones perform the same role except the call is routed through your broadband or fibre optic cables and then onto the final destination.

Can a VoIP phone be used as a regular phone?

Yes a VoIP phone can be used as a regular phone. You can make and receive calls to and from traditional landlines or mobiles.

What equipment is required for VoIP?

Only three things are needed to get your system up and running. An Internet connection, a VoIP service provider and a VoIP-ready handset.

Ideally, your internet connection would be high speed broadband or fibre optic cable. A service provider, such as WestTech will enable and organise access to available services. Finally, you will need a VoIP ready handset. These are identical to traditional handsets and come in a range of designs. Alternatively analog telephone adapters can be used to allow traditional phones to access the VoIP system or a software application can be used on a smartphone to join the VoIP network.

A range of more advanced options are available. These include PC headsets that allow users to make and receive calls without holding a handset or PC phones. PC phones are identical  to traditional phone handsets but can be plugged straight into a laptop through a USB cable.

What are the advantages of VoIP?

There are five major benefits to a VoIP system.

The first is cost. You are no longer paying for a traditional landline provider and are therefore no longer liable for line rental or costly international calls. Usually this substantial saving alone far outweighs the initial setup of the VoIP system in your business.

The second is call quality. As the system relies on your internet connection, which is capable of carrying far more information than traditional phone lines, the call quality is far higher than traditional analog phones.

The third advantage is scalability. Traditional analogue phones are dependent on installing a new physical cable. Which is costly and time consuming. After establishment of the system a new phone with a separate designated number can be added to your business in minutes.

Fourthly, portablility. VoIP systems can be accessed through a traditional desktop phone or alternately through an application on a smartphone. This allows your business complete freedom to contact or be contacted by clients at anytime anywhere.

Finally, security. Modern business is dependent on making secure calls. As VoIP uses the internet to transmit data, calls are virtually impossible to eavesdrop on. These systems also use a variety of security protocols, such as two-factor authentication and single-sign-on, to further enhance your security.

In addition to those key benefits VoIP systems come with a host of other services. Including, voicemail, auto attendant, follow me forwarding, caller ID, call routing et

As VoIP utilises the internet instead of traditional cables there is no need to pay the costs of line rental, expensive overseas calls or the additional costs of having a new physical line put into your business. VoIP systems are secure as they utilise a host of security features including two-factor authentication and single-sign-on.
